Mirissa is a small fishing port on Sri Lanka’s South Coast, popular for surfing and whale watching. Waters around Mirissa are particularly rich in plankton. A particular micro-organisms that whale’s feed on.
Did you know that one of the biggest threats to these beautiful whales is the plastic in the ocean. Not only in Sri Lanka, but throughout the worlds oceans. Once digested they pile up in their stomachs obstructing their bowels preventing them from digesting good leading them to starve to death.
We at Tikiri are committed to doing our very best to create awareness to the plastic menace in an around the coastal area where these magnificent sea animals live.
This is exactly what we did when we installed a giant structure made of used motor parts with the message ‘ Save our beautiful sea animals by keeping even the tiniest bits of plastic out of our oceans’
We also did a beach clean and removed several large bags of washed up rubbish from the ocean.
This is our second project. The first was the installation of the Giant Turtle in the beach park in Negambo which is a city on the west coast north of the capital Colombo.
Did you know that 90% of toys in the market are made of plastic which take up to 1000 years to decompose in landfills.
We can all do our bit, so please the next time you go for a walk on the beach, please pick up some rubbish so it doesn't go back into the sea and injure these beautiful animals.
